  • John Conrad 'Con' Hazlehurst Cherry, born in Paddington, England, on the 7th September 1914, was an English rower who competed at the 1936 Summer Olympics, held in Berlin, along competing in three Oxford vs. Cambridge boat race.

    John was on the losing Oxford team in the 1936 Oxford vs.Cambridge Boat Race; he became the OUBC President in 1937 and was on the winning Oxford teams in the 1937 Oxford vs. Cambridge boat race, the team which broke Cambridge's 13 year unbeaten run, and was then on the winning Oxford team in the 1938 boat race, the first Oxford vs. Cambridge boat race to be televised.

    In 1940, Henry married Glory Rowe, sister of his 1937 Oxford Crew teammate, R.G. Rowe, and had one daughter with Glory.

    John fought in the Royal Navy during World War II,attaining the rank of Lieutenant on the HMS Welshman, and was killed in action on the 1st February 1943 when the HMS Welshman was sunk by a Nazi U-617, Northeast of Tobruk.

    As John does not have a grave, his name is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.
