Quotes

  • [press conference for Renoir (2025) at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival] When I was 10 or 11, I realised I wanted to make films. I wanted to be able to convey these emotions I experienced at the time and to turn this into a film. That's the reason why I adopted this viewpoint. What I most wanted to express in the film was emotions - the emotions when one is a child and a pre-teenager. I've been thinking about this project for quite some time. During childhood, we often find it difficult to know what we feel. Sometimes we perceive things but it's hard to put words to them. So the things I felt at the time which I couldn't really express in words when I was a child, once I had become an adult, with hindsight, I understood what it was all about. Sometimes I was hurt, I felt things, and this is what I wanted to portray in images.
