Liverpool-raised actor, screenwriter, director and producer Tom Murphy was born in Carshalton, Surrey to Sue Gordon, an artist, and Patrick Murphy, a singer/songwriter, actor and theatre director. His parents separated when he was a few years old.
He was educated at Maghull High School and Sixth Form and went on to study Acting for Film & Television at Liverpool Media Academy, before taking a term of acting classes at ActUpNorth Liverpool.
He began writing his own scripts and formed his own production company, XRhodes Films, and in 2014 - 2017 he wrote, produced, directed and starred in a six-part mockumentary web-series Forward Slash/Jobs (2019), wrote, produced, directed and starred in a short film Once a Clown (2019), a second series of his web-series Forward Slash/Jobs: Page Could Not Be Found (2019) and a short film right before the Covid-19 pandemic hit An Injection a Day (2020).
His father passed away six hours after the release of 'Once a Clown'.
He spent the lockdown writing and had his first child, a son, River Patrick Murphy, in 2020.
2021 marked a re-brand for XRhodes Films and they became Grim Tidings Picture Company. Tom spent the next year building his crew and in March 2022, under this new banner and with this new team, he wrote, produced, directed and starred in his first film in exactly 2 years to the day - Milk and Two Bullets (2023).
Since then he has added Oddly Optimistic Pictures to his film network, who debuted the film 'coping.' in February 2026 - Coping. (2026)
