Father, John Russell, was the long time editor of the Aurora Beacon News in Aurora, IL. Mother was a social worker/homemaker/substitute teacher and also worked at the Beacon News.
Graduated with a BA in Mass Communications from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2005, the same school attended by his parents and one brother.
