At the 1989 World Snooker Championship he won his first-round match against Cliff Thorburn at 2:39AM - one of the latest ever finishes in the World Championship.

As well as being known for his slow and cautious play, Charlton was often heard swearing under his breath in televised matches.

In 1992 Charlton was the first ever player to be whitewashed in a World Championship match at the Crucible (he lost 10-0 to John Parrott).

Charlton lost the 1975 World Championship final against Ray Reardon in a first-to-31 frames contest, despite being 29-23 ahead. The final was held in Melbourne in his home country, Australia.
