Julian Reichelt

Biography

Julian Reichelt

Overview

  • Born
    June 15, 1980 · Hamburg, Germany

Biography

  • Reichelt's parents work as journalists: His father Hans-Heinrich Reichelt was, among other things, deputy editorial director at Bild's Berlin editorial office and a freelance journalist, while his mother Katrin Reichelt was a freelance journalist dealing with medical topics. According to Reichelt, the parents met "via Bild." Together they founded a publishing house for medical journalism and run a homeopathy website. Reichelt attended the Othmarschen high school in Hamburg and passed his Abitur there in 2000.

Reichelt attended the Othmarschen high school in Hamburg and passed his Abitur there in 2000. From 2002 to 2003, he was a trainee at Bild and underwent journalism training at the Axel Springer Academy. He reported from Afghanistan, Georgia, Thailand, Iraq, Sudan and Lebanon, among other places, partly as a war correspondent. In 2007, he became chief reporter.

From February 2014, he succeeded Manfred Hart as editor-in-chief of Bild.de. After overall editor Kai Diekmann left Springer-Verlag on January 31, 2017, Reichelt took over as chairman of the editors-in-chief and thus overall editorial responsibility for Bild-Zeitung. Following the departure of Tanit Koch, the only woman at the top of Bild, on March 1, 2018, Reichelt also took over as editor-in-chief of Bild's print edition. As a result, the sharp decline in BILD's circulation continued: It stood at around 1.24 million copies in the first quarter of 2021, up from 1.57 million copies when Reichelt took office as editor-in-chief of the print edition in March 2018.

In 2020, he was featured in the seven-part documentary series BILD.Macht.Deutschland? about the Bild editorial team on Amazon Prime.
