Biography

Cheyne Bush is a film director, musician, and sound designer from Culver City, CA. He is known for Jeffrey (2015), and his various work on sound and music for animations and live-action films. He has been creating video works since he learned how to use Final Cut Pro when he was 12, when he began filming everything he could. He started utilizing 16mm film in university, and discovered a world of possibilities of image-making and storytelling in the process.

Cheyne Taylor Bush was born in Brookline, MA. In addition to living in New England, he has also lived in New York and Los Angeles. From a very young age, Bush knew he wanted to be a filmmaker and musician. He earned a BFA in Music Tech at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). Inspired by filmmakers such as Stanley Kubrick, Alain Resnais, and Stan Brakhage, Bush decided to pursue a graduate degree in Film/Video at CalArts, immediately after earning his Bachelor's degree. To date, his film pursuits have been primarily experimental and abstract, a rich blend of interwoven imagery and music. Now in the third and final year of the program, the filmmaker has decided to try a different direction. His thesis short film Jeffrey, marks Bush's first attempt at narrative film since entering the program. With this project, he set out to explore the complexities of mental illness while maintaining a sense of transparency in his approach. Shot on 16mm film in the Super16 format, Bush collected old film stock over the course of three years, much of it expired. A perpetual risk taker, this aesthetic choice made him unable to fully control the outcome, which added an element of the unknown and intrigue to this venture. This film stock produced a unique, extremely grainy quality which helps convey a nostalgic atmosphere. The result is a haunting, illusory, dreamlike production.
