- Peter Schmidl was born on January 10, 1941 in Olmütz, Protectorate Bohemia and Moravia, Germany. He is known for Worth (2020), Leonard Bernstein: Larger Than Life (2016) and La clemenza di Tito (2003). He died on February 1, 2025 in Austria.
- He retired in 2010.
- In 1965 he was engaged as Second Clarinettist in the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera. Three years later he became First Clarinettist and was admitted to the Association of the Vienna Philharmonic.
- Schmidl was a member of several Philharmonic Chamber Music Ensembles, such as the Vienna Octet, the Vienna Ring Ensemble and the Viennan Wind Soloists.
- From 1967 Schmidl taught at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. From 2001 to 2005 he worked as managing director of the orchestra.
- In 2006 he was appointed dean of the Vienna State Opera.
