- John studied in the United States, England, the Czech Republic, and Finland. He graduated cum laude from Northeastern University, earned an MBA from Rochester Institute of Technology and an LLB from BPP University in London, and a Master of Social Sciences degree at Tampere University of Applied Sciences.
- John was a Division I varsity rower at Northeastern University (Boston, USA), earning four varsity letters. He later won gold at the 2009 World Rowing Masters Championships, the 2019 World Rowing Indoor Championships representing the United States, and two gold medals at the 2025 World Rowing Indoor Championships as a member of Finland's national indoor rowing team. He also holds multiple Concept2 indoor rowing records.
- John competes in the Finnish sport of wife carrying and is the only American inducted into the Wife Carrying Hall of Fame (class of 2024). Wife carrying is a 253-meter obstacle race in which a man carries a female teammate through a series of obstacles. Over more than 20 years in the sport, John has won the U.S. and U.K. Wife Carrying Championships and has also earned podium finishes at the World Wife Carrying Championships.
