In her middle school years, Ryu Hye-Young was known as a model student, consistently ranking near the top of her class. Yet she couldn't imagine spending what she considered the happiest time of her life solely buried in books. When people around her advised, "Just endure three more years, then you'll have all the freedom you want in college," she thought otherwise. "Every day matters. How could I waste three whole years?" With that conviction, she chose to pursue acting at the Theater and Film Department of Kyewon High School of Arts.
During her time there, she auditioned for the short film 'High School Girls' (2008) at the suggestion of a senior. It was her first time in front of the camera, but her assured performance hardly felt like that of a beginner. The film won Best Short in Competition at the 10th Seoul International Women's Film Festival, and for Ryu, it was a defining moment - the spark that confirmed her path as an actress.
