- Tôkô Shinoda was born on March 28, 1913 in Dalian, Manchuria, China. Tôkô is known for Double Suicide (1969), Clouds at Sunset (1967) and Under the Blossoming Cherry Trees (1975). Tôkô died on March 1, 2021 in Tokyo, Japan.

- She was a modern abstract artist who was trained in ancient Japanese calligraphy. She embellished calligraphic characters in order to heighten their meaning. Her paintings and lithographs have been shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC.
