Biography

Joey Ally is a writer, director, actor and musician. Her short films have screened internationally including at the Sundance Film Festival, Tribeca, and BFI:London, and online with Vimeo Staff Pick Premieres and The New Yorker's "The Screening Room." Her feature films have been developed through the Sundance Institute's Screenwriters and Directors labs, Catalyst and the Creative Producing Summit. Joey is the 2019 recipient of the The Adrienne Shelly Foundation Women Filmmakers Grant x Sundance Institute, and an alum of the American Film Institute Directing Workshop for Women, Tribeca/Chanel "Through Her Lens," AFI/Fox Directors Lab, and the Universal Pictures Directors Intensive.

Joey Ally is a writer, director, actor and musician. Her feature film debut The Hater, which she wrote, directed, and starred in alongside Bruce Dern, Meredith Hagner, Ali Larter, Nora Dunn, Ian Harding and D'Angelo Lacy, was produced by Pulse Films and Red Crown, and distributed by Vertical and Hulu.

Her award winning short films Queen of Hearts, Joy Joy Nails, Partners, and Minimum Wage have screened internationally including at the Sundance Film Festival, Tribeca, Palm Springs International Shorfest, and Aspen Shortfest, and online with Vimeo Staff Pick Premieres, Short of the Week and The New Yorker's "The Screening Room." Joey also starred in, co-wrote and executive-produced director Gillian Barnes' Are You Still Singing for Shatterbox/Turner, which was a selection at BFI: London2019 and screened on TBS, and starred in Followers and Uproot, both directed by Julia Bales, and D as in Do Not for director Rachel Wolther.

Joey is the 2019 recipient of the The Adrienne Shelly Foundation Women Filmmakers Grant x Sundance Institute, and an alum of the American Film Institute Directing Workshop for Women, Tribeca/Chanel "Through Her Lens," AFI/Fox Directors Lab, and the Universal Pictures Directors Intensive. She is an alum of Amherst College, with a B.A. in Political Science and French. She enjoys making music, in and out of film, and is obsessed with her dog Ziggy.
