Kees-Jan Mulder

Biography

  • Kees-Jan Mulder is an award winning director of films, docs and hybrid essays. His films revolve around the question of what total surrender may cost.

Mulder completed Directing Fiction at the Utrecht Art Academy with the distinction of cum laude and pursued Theology studies in Utrecht and Amsterdam. His graduation film, Gods Lam (2013), received the HKU Award, won the Youth Award at Zubroffka Film Fest., achieved international recognition at various film festivals and was displayed in museums, including the MAXXI National Museum of the XXI Century Arts in Rome.

Subsequently, with Dos Santos (2015) produced by BIND, co-directed with International Emmy Award Winner Maarten van Voornveld and selected by the Dutch Academy for Film, Mulder again depicted what complete surrender may cost.

Nudes (2022), competing at the International Children's Film Festival in Chicago, premiered at Cinekid Amsterdam and was nominated for the best film award there. The movie about the disappearance of a group of boys, has been translated into four languages, was selected for several international film festivals and is presently utilized in secondary schools across the Netherlands, Germany, Greece, the US and Russia to initiate discussions about sexting and online bullying.

Het Wonder van Oirsbeek (2023, produced by Witfilm) and co-directed with Jaap van Heusden, was warmly received at the Dutch Film Festival, garnered attention on national TV and will have it's world premiere at the 26th Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival.

Throughout his career, Mulder has crafted numerous films in Africa and Asia, transitioning between documentary-style filmmaking, fiction and participatory video while exploring hybrid forms of cinematic expression. Several of his found footage video essays for Dag6 and NieuwLicht gained significant popularity in the Netherlands.
