Biography

Gillian Wallace Horvat is an award-winning American filmmaker, writer, and producer known for her sharp wit, provocative themes, and genre-bending storytelling. Based in Los Angeles, she has established a distinct voice in contemporary cinema by seamlessly blending dark comedy, horror, and biting social commentary. She holds a BFA in Film & Television Production from New York University and an MA in Cinema & Media Studies from UCLA.

Horvat made her feature directorial debut with the critically acclaimed psychological horror-comedy I Blame Society (2020), which she also co-wrote and starred in as a fictionalised version of herself. The film, which satirizes post-#MeToo Hollywood culture and the industry's obsession with "strong female leads," premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and earned her a nomination for the prestigious Independent Spirit Award. Before her feature debut, she directed notable short films, including Kiss Kiss Fingerbang (2015), which won the Midnight Shorts Jury Prize at SXSW, and Whiskey Fist (2017).

In addition to her narrative work, Horvat is an accomplished documentary producer and film archivist. She produced the feature documentary A Fuller Life (2013), celebrating the legacy of director Samuel Fuller, which made its debut at the Venice Film Festival. She has directed and produced numerous short retrospectives and historical documentaries for major home video distributors like Arrow Films and Kino Lorber, covering everything from classic Hollywood masters to cult television.
