Proposed to the future Tsarina Alexandra, but she refused him. He then fell in love with Hélène d'Orléans, daughter of Marie Isabelle d'Orléans, and 5th great-granddaughter of Philippe d'Orléans. Hélène's mother, Albert's parents, and Queen Victoria supported the match. However, marriage would have meant Albert forfeiting his claim to the throne, pursuant to the Act of Settlement, as Hélène was Catholic; his willingness to do just that was opposed by Victoria's Prime Minister Robert Gascoyne-Cecil. Hélène offered to convert to Anglicanism so that Albert could keep his place in the line of succession, but her father would not consent to her conversion, a decision supported by Pope Leo XIII, to whom Hélène had beseeched for a dispensation. The proposed match fell apart, and Hélène later married The Duke of Aosta. Albert was engaged Princess Mary of Teck (the future Queen Mary) when he died, who later married his brother.

He is the most recent expected future British monarch to never ascend the throne, because he predeceased his grandmother and father.
