Biography

A dynamic and versatile character actor with a distinctive voice and a powerful emotional facility, James Patrick Nelson was born and raised in Los Angeles and trained at the Boston University School of Theatre and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts.

He began his Off-Broadway career in "The Three Sisters" with Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard, and "Ivanov" with Ethan Hawke and Joely Richardson, directed by Austin Pendleton. He won a Helen Hayes Award for Bedlam's "Sense and Sensibility" at the Folger Theatre, reprised at the American Repertory Theatre. He recently starred in three Off-Broadway world premieres, and the world premiere of "Immortal Longings," the final play by Tony-winner Terrence McNally, and he appeared in Broadway's "Slave Play" at the Mark Taper Forum.

His original TV pilot "For Years to Come" (co-starring Richard Riehle from "Office Space") premiered at SeriesFest and played to sold-out crowds at a dozen top festivals including Outfest Los Angeles. It currently streams on Short Frame with a quarter-million views. His latest film "Something to Surprise Me" is in post-production.
