In August 2007, her daughter Sophie Lancaster and Sophie's boyfriend, Rob, were brutally attacked by a gang of teenage thugs in a park in Lancashire, England. The gang had targeted the couple because of their Goth appearance. Sophie suffered severe head injuries, went into a coma and died 13 days later. Sylvia, along with family and friends, set up a campaign in her daughter's name - Stamp Out Prejudice, Hatred and Intolerance Everywhere (S.O.P.H.I.E).
