In 2001, he became a regular driver for Jaguar in Formula One, but was released by the team after scoring no points in the opening four races of the season and was replaced by
Pedro de la Rosa from the Spanish Grand Prix onwards. He immediately found a new team in Prost, for whom he participated in the following ten Grand Prix weekends. He was sidelined for the final three races of the season after being injured in a high-speed crash during the Belgian Grand Prix. His seat was taken by Czech rookie
Tomás Enge for the final three races of the season.
