Biography

Born 16 February 1935 in Sacavém, he is an acclaimed Portuguese photographer and photojournalist. Gageiro work is similar of the postwar French photographers Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Doisneau and Willy Ronis. Jorge Pedro Sousa, in his thesis on the history of photojournalism in Portugal characterized Gageiro's photographic practice by the same "aesthetic-compositional quality, human value and dramatic form" that are also found in W. Eugene Smith and Henri Cartier-Bresson.

He works exclusively in black and white.

His work participated in a photography exhibition with work of Eduardo Gageiro, José Antunes and Alfredo Cunha to celebrate the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution / 25 April 1974 military coup in 1994, organized by Emanuel AG as one of the organizers of the Curtas Vila do Conde 2nd International Film Festival, conjointly the selection of a film retrospective from several filmmakers to tell the story of the cinema of that period (Fernando Lopes and Manuel Costa e Silva were two of them).
