Biography

  • Ferit Karahan is a Kurdish filmmaker from Eastern Anatolia whose work explores the intersections of violence, social isolation, and the unseen within the shadowy landscapes of memory. His debut feature, The Fall From Heaven (2013), won the Best Film Award at the Antalya Film Festival and the Best First Film Award at the Ankara Film Festival. His second feature, Brother's Keeper (2021), had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it received the FIPRESCI Award. The film went on to win more than 40 international awards and screened at over 200 festivals worldwide, including the BFI London Film Festival, Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Sarajevo Film Festival, and Chicago International Film Festival. It was also released theatrically in numerous countries, including the United States, France, Germany, Spain, Brazil, and Mexico. Karahan's films are deeply rooted in the landscapes and oral traditions of Eastern Anatolia, combining stark realism with subjective memory, folklore, and political undercurrents. His latest feature film, Djinn Wedding (2026), will have its world premiere in the Platform Competition, the Toronto International Film Festival's main competitive section.
