Biography

Matej is a film director and producer who debuted with Touchless in 2013 as the youngest European director.

Matej has since directed numerous TV series, and in 2021, he received both Czech Lion Academy Award and Czech Critics Award for Rats, an original insight into the world of a young drug dealer and police informant.

He's just recently finished his second feature film, We Have Never Been Modern, which premiered in the Official Competition at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in Europe and at Palm Springs International Film Festival in the US. He was awarded The Hollywood Reporter Award for Best Film and Best Director at the Riviera IFF. The film is inspired by the true story of intersex people in the 1930s, shortly before the war destroyed everything. It was nominated for 12 Czech Lion Awards, including Best Film and Best Director, and released on Netflix in CEE.

This year, he's directed two major Czech series presented at Berlinale Series and Canneseries; Daughter of the Nation for Canal+ and We're On It, Comrades! for Czech TV & ZDF Germany.

Matej also works as a commercial director and producer while managing Barletta, a production company that develops film and commercial projects and works with partners worldwide, such as HBO MAX, Netflix, Canal+, AMC US, Goodfellas, Czech Television, Voyo, ZDF, and others.
