She was from Colorado but was in California with her family by 1930. She worked as an usherette at a theater, in the early 1930's.She started in movies as a Busby Berkeley-Dancer in musicals like "Dames" and "Gold Diggers of 1935". They liked her so much at Warner Bros that in 1934 she was chosen to be developed into "a star" where they were going to give her dialogue lessons and little roles to build her into a feature star. However, she decided to get married in 1934 and had a baby in 1936 By 1940 she wasn't listed as an actress anymore. She just had the one daughter and .she and her husband were married until he died in 1976. .

Avis St John died in 1979.
