João is a filmmaker, poet and researcher (from Lisbon, Portugal) with strong inclinations towards experimental ethnography and activism. He's been creatively engaging with organizations that focus on social justice and environmental awareness since film school.
From 2010 onward he teamed up with the Cinéma du Désert initiative: a solar powered cinema that travels by land screening films for free to isolated communities that rarely have (or never had) the opportunity to experience the magical effect of the moving image. So far, the project has gone from West Africa to Central Asia.
After an MA in Visual Anthropology with the University of Manchester and fieldworks in the Peruvian Amazon, Trás-os-Montes and Hong Kong, João returned to Portugal and kickstarted "Filmes Sombra" - a production company focused on Art, Audiovisual and Anthropology - where he presently develops a myriad of different artistic initiatives as a self shooting director, video editor, curator, copywriter and, occasionally, as a performer.
