Biography

Yassin Koptan

Mini bio

  • Yassin Koptan is an Egyptian filmmaker, editor, and director from Alexandria whose work bridges raw youth culture, music, and emotionally charged storytelling. Originally emerging from Egypt’s skateboarding scene, Koptan first appeared in the acclaimed independent film Microphone, an experience that helped spark his passion for cinema. He later moved to Los Angeles to study filmmaking, where he developed his voice as a writer, director, and editor.

His thesis short film, Piece of Wood, earned recognition on the festival circuit, including screenings at prestigious festivals such as Austin and Cannes, helping establish him as a rising talent with an instinct for intimate, visually driven storytelling. Koptan also directed the short film Skumjas, which screened at notable festivals including Frameline and Woodstock.

In the music world, Koptan has directed and edited work for major artists across the Middle East, including Cairokee and Marwan Moussa, whose video The End of the World became a breakout success in Egypt. As an editor, he has collaborated with acclaimed filmmaker Tony Kaye, further expanding his range across narrative, music-driven, and experimental forms.

After seven years in Los Angeles, Koptan returned to Egypt, where he continues to develop original work rooted in the tension between ambition, identity, and survival. In 2026, Yassin prepares his feature directorial debut, Helwa, a coming-of-age drama set in Alexandria’s skateboarding world.
