Biography

Nina Pulkkis is a Finnish science journalist and documentary director specializing in engineering, chemistry and synthetic biology, with a particular focus on biomaterials and biotechnology. Between 2004 and 2016 she produced, directed and/or wrote over 40 documentaries for Finnish broadcast television in a series of portraits of companies and entrepreneurs that together trace the modern history of Finland. Her five-part science series The Future of Finland, co-written with Howard Jacobs, won two Best Science Documentary awards and an honourable mention at the 2016 Life Sciences Film Festival (International Festival of Documentary Films on Life Sciences) in Prague. That same year the Finnish Forest Association awarded her its Silver Medal of Honour for her work as a science communicator. She studied philosophy at the University of Helsinki and today runs Photino Science Communications. Planet of the Microbes is her latest film.
