Biography

Kevin Schmutzler

Overview

  • Born
    1990 · Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany

Biography

  • Kevin Schmutzler was born in Germany, but has spent most of his filmmaking career on international ground. Often mistaken for his brother and co-director Tobias Schmutzler, Kevin forms one half of the Munich-based directing duo focused on cinematic stories that drive social impact.

Together, Kevin and Toby run "FilmCrew Media", a production company dedicated to making films that inspire real-world change. Their early work at university includes the immersive 360° experience Crossing Borders (2019) and the Kinshasa-set documentary Where the Street Ends. In 2018, they released their debut feature film Robin: Watch for Wishes (2018), Robin, which launched the global "Watch for Wishes" campaign to support children in need.

Kevin has gone on to produce impact-driven documentaries like Netflix's Biking Borders (2021), which funded seven schools across South America and Africa, and Malte Zierden's Tierbrücke (2025), which helped establish a shelter for abandoned animals during the Ukraine war.

In 2025, Kevin and Toby's second narrative feature Nawi: Dear Future Me (2024) became Kenya's official Oscar submission for Best International Feature. The film, which won an Africa Movie Academy Award, also launched initiatives protecting young girls in Kenya from child marriage.
