Biography

D.J. Rivera joined the United States Infantry immediately after high school, serving as a Combat Operations Specialist. Known among his fellow soldiers as "the movie guy," Rivera was famous for maintaining a massive film collection and making sure everyone had something to watch, whether stationed stateside or deployed overseas. What felt like a one man Blockbuster Video for the troops quietly foreshadowed his future in film.

After completing his military service, D.J. used his GI Bill to attend film school, earning dual master’s degrees, a Master of Science in Entertainment Business and a Master of Arts in Film Production. He was hand selected for Full Sail University’s inaugural Master of Arts in Film Production class and later became the program’s first valedictorian. He also received Course Director’s Awards from Academy Award winner Bill Benton (Dances With Wolves) for excellence and advanced knowledge of the film assembly process.

Wasting no time, D.J. rose quickly in the industry, working early in his career on projects for ESPN, Fox, Warner Bros., and other major outlets. He soon became sought after for both mainstream and independent productions, taking on roles including producer, production manager, line producer, and art director across short films, features, documentaries, commercials, and music driven content. His collaborations include artists affiliated with American Idol, The X Factor, and Def Jam Recordings, with projects premiering at festivals, live events, and television broadcasts. He also directed and produced the award winning commercial Get Buzzed for Daily Buzz Coffee, which won Best Commercial at the 12 Months Film Festival.

His first major narrative project was the science fiction drama Sundown, where he served as producer, writer, and post production supervisor. The well-crafted short film earned him his first award, the Special Jury Award from the Los Angeles Urban Film Festival and went on to receive multiple nominations and awards, later becoming available to stream on major platforms including Amazon Prime.

The ambitious filmmaker gained further recognition after resurrecting the once abandoned school project Vessel, rewriting the concept and script overnight and transforming it into an award winning POV found footage short. The film earned Best Editing at the Acme Film Festival, Best Sound at the Independent Horror Movie Awards, and Best Original Idea from the Top Indie Film Awards. His debut feature film Torrent screened internationally, winning Best No Budget Feature at the Gold Movie Awards at the London BAFTA Theater, Best Director at the California Film Awards, Best Screenplay at the European Independent Film Awards, and additional honors worldwide. He was also nominated for Best Producer at the Oniros Film Awards.

D.J. Rivera’s feature Messiah streamed at comic conventions across the United States and won Best Feature Film at Indiana Comic Con. He continues to develop projects across film, digital media, and branding, including his creative brand Filmindset, his film release platform Vault 66 showcasing classic and independent films, and a growing network of film festivals.
