Mykal Cushnie is a Jamaican director and editor whose work spans documentary, short film, and feature film across Africa and the Caribbean. His features Run Kenya (2014), Remembering Lawi (2014), Sweetest Taboo (2014) with Spielworks Media, Kenya. Under DSE Jamaica, his directing credits include 50 Days in Afrika (2014), Savannah (2018), Before Yuh Dead (2021), Inside Portmore (2022), We Still Deh Ya, After Hurricane Melissa (2026), produced in partnership with Humanity Ova Vanity, and Threads of Us (2025), selected to screen at Essence Film Festival and nominated for Best Director at the Toronto Nollywood International Film Festival.
As a First Assistant Director, his credits include Fareye (2025), directed by Hayden McLean, selected to screen at the 34th Raindance Film Festival, Marriage Clause (2026), directed by Omar Derby, and Jenna In Law (2023), Happily Ever Awkward (2025), and Surprise! I Love You (2026), directed by Jesane Jackson, LAB Studios, alongside commercial productions for Digicel, KFC, and the Jamaica Tourist Board.
Co-founder of DSE Jamaica with Donisha Prendergast, an independent production studio dedicated to Caribbean and diaspora storytelling. Community work includes a partnership with CrimeStop and The LAB to deliver filmmaking workshops targeting youth from vulnerable communities across Jamaica, and a sustained creative partnership with Humanity Ova Vanity documenting hurricane relief and community rebuilding in post Melissa Jamaica.
