- Mary's great uncle, Wallace MacDonald, got his start in Hollywood with fellow Canadian Mack Sennett's Keystone Pictures where he played alongside Charlie Chaplin, Mabel Normand, Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle and Harold Lloyd. After appearing in 120 films, he turned his talents to producing and headed up the B Unit at Columbia Pictures during the 1950s.

- Has been working closely with the 1970s rock band Klaatu to write "Sell Out: The Klaatu Story" - a screenplay about their rise and fall from fame when a rumor swept the world that they were the Beatles secretly reunited.
- In a second marriage to Mark Rival with a blended family of five teenagers. As a writer she believes the craziness around her provides an endless supply of material.
- Her father, Peter V. MacDonald, wrote the "Court Jesters" series of legal humor books and a column in the Toronto Star for many years.
