Arthur Janov was an American psychologist, psychotherapist, and author, who gained notability as the creator of Primal Therapy, The son of Russian/Jewish immigrants who grew up in Boyle Heights, a low income neighborhood east of Downtown L.A. The idea of this new form of treatment surfaced when one of Janov's patients told about an Antonin Artaud-like theatrical performance at Conway Hall, London, in which Raphael Montañez Ortiz dressed in diapers shouted "Mommy! Daddy! Mommy! Daddy!" throughout the act. In 1970 "The Primal Scream - Primal Therapy: The Cure for Neurosis" was published. The book by Arthur Janov became a worldwide bestseller as Primal Therapy became very influential during a period of time and attracted a large number of patients throughout the Western world.
