Loretta van der Horst

Loretta van der Horst is a Dutch-Puerto Rican producer-director. Her debut Behind the Blood (IDFA, 2019) set in Honduras, won Best International Documentary at HUMAN Film Festival Oslo. The Border Crossed Us (IDFA, 2023), set on the U.S.-Mexico border, earned three Dutch Academy Award nominations. Earlier, she worked across Latin America as a journalist, earning Emmy nominations for films in New York (PBS POV) and Mexico (Discovery Channel). She is now directing The Documenters (VPRO), on online researchers archiving war crimes evidence amid geopolitical interest. At her company The Waves, she produces author-driven narrative films and documentaries. She founded New Producers Academy in 2020 to make the film industry more diverse & inclusive. She is a member of Global Impact Producers Alliance and an alumna of IDFAcademy, IFFR Rotterdamlab, and Docsociety Impact Lab.
