Biography

Alan Hopkins, MA is a Screenwriter, Director and Founder of HAL Pictures Ltd.

Alan is a Dublin-based writer-director, and lead creative executive at HAL Pictures.

His films have screened on national broadcasters and major film festivals across continents, picking up multiple awards along the way.

His most recently completed work, the award winning short film Ogham (2024), funded through Screen Ireland’s Focus Shorts scheme, premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh in 2024 and continues its international festival run.

Alan is constantly working to develop new Feature Film and Television projects and is in pre-production to direct a second Focus Short with Screen Ireland, A Knock at Your Door filming January 2026.

Alan is a graduate of IADT’s National Film School with a major in Drama direction, also holding a Master’s in Screenwriting from the same institution. He was selected for the prestigious StoryHouse Lab in 2025 and is part of Screen Ireland’s mentorship programme, shadowing writer-director Frank Berry.
