- Alison McGirr, an Australian actress born to Irish parents, spent her childhood between Sydney and Ireland. Alison studied Fine Arts Acting at QUT in Brisbane, Australia and upon graduating received the Jennifer Blocksidge Award for the 'Most Outstanding Actor". Producing and starring in many independent theatre productions, she made her on screen debut on Australian soap opera Home and Away (1988) followed by an appearance on Penny Dreadful (2014) In 2017 she was cast in Bruce Beresford's latest film Ladies in Black, which went on to become the highest grossing Australian Film of 2018 and an instant classic. She can be seen in the hilarious dramedy THIRTY, a series about four friends trying to get their lives together after they hit the big 3-0. Season two is due to be released later this year, with filming of a third season slated to begin soon. Alison's next film is the highly anticipated Lily by Irish filmmaker Graham Cantwell based on the multi award winning short film of the same name.

- During her early career, McGirr became an ongoing participant in the National Film and Sound Archive's project documenting the experiences of young Australian artists.
- She auditioned for Ladies in Black while she was in Los Angeles. Rather than auditioning in Australia, McGirr submitted her audition remotely from Los Angeles.
- She had extensive theatre experience before becoming widely known on screen. At QUT, she performed in productions including Much Ado About Nothing, Jane Eyre, Summer and Smoke, Festen and A Month in the Country.
- She was involved in writing and producing theatre. Before her film breakthrough, McGirr co-wrote Abby of Love in a Bio Box and co-produced The Interview, demonstrating that her work has never been limited to acting.
- McGirr said she had read The Women in Black and finished it in just two sittings. She particularly appreciated how the story could feel distinctly Australian while still dealing with universal themes.
