Maurice Byrne

Biography

Maurice Byrne

Mini bio

  • Maurice was born in Dublin but spent his formative years in Northern Ireland in the town of Dungannon, before moving with his family to live in Dublin when he was ten.

Having received his secondary education from the Jesuits at Gonzaga College, Dublin, and after a year learning French at the University of Grenoble, Maurice enrolled at University College Dublin to study law. This led to his qualification as a solicitor and, inevitably, a career as a lawyer. Maurice spent 20 years practising European trade and competition (antitrust) law in Brussels, during which time he founded the law firm Byrne & Associés before its merger with an international law firm based in the United States.

After seven years as a partner (and thousands of billable hours), Maurice decided it was time to seek his true calling and head for pastures new. He accepted a place at Central School of Speech and Drama, and the rest is history.

Maurice initially indulged his love of Shakespeare, and appeared in Twelfth Night, Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest, Hamlet and Henry V, among others, but was eventually drawn to the screen. Recent (and upcoming) television includes the Italian crime series Gomorrah and Angel of Darkness, the sequel to the acclaimed Alienist on Netflix. Recent film credits include Destination: Dewsbury, The Right Bus and The Loss Adjuster, where Maurice plays an English vicar, not the first time he has played a man of the cloth. Perhaps the Jesuits are having the last laugh...
