IMDbProStarmeterSee rank
After a long career in military education, he was promoted to head of the Fourth Division of the Peruvian Military Education Center, which he directed from 1955 to 1958.

He led the military junta that deposed President Fernando Belaúnde Terry on October 3, 1968, assuming office with the title "President of the Revolutionary Government of the Armed Forces of Peru."

On March 10, 1973, his right leg was amputated following gangrene that had degenerated into an abdominal aortic aneurysm, which had nearly led to his death.

He was in turn deposed in a military coup on August 30, 1975, by General Francisco Morales Bermúdez, then Prime Minister.

Velasco lived the last two years of his life in a sort of voluntary seclusion, dying in the military hospital in Lima at the age of 67.

  • Trivia
Met future strongman Hugo Chávez in 1974 when Chávez and a dozen fellow cadets from the Bolivarian Military University of Venezuela traveled to Ayacucho, Peru to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Ayacucho. Alvarado gave each of them a pocket edition of La Revolución Nacional Peruana ("The Peruvian National Revolution"). Chávez kept the book with him constantly, but lost it after his arrest for leading a failed coup d'état in 1992.
