  • Served as Alaska's lone representative in the U.S. House of Representatives from March 6, 1973 to his death on March 18, 2022.
  • Was the 45th Dean of the House, the title bestowed on the longest serving member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
  • Lost consciousness while a flight from Los Angeles to Seattle was in mid flight. He was pronounced dead in Seattle after the flight landed.

  • Both Young, and his immediate predecessor as US Representative from Alaska, Nick Begich, died while on board an airplane, Young on March 18, 2022, and Begich on October 16, 1972, almost 50 years apart.
