Vicente Ortiz Gimeno

Biography

  • Vicente Ortiz Gimeno is a composer, clarinetist and conductor, awarded in numerous contests in Europe and United States. His father, Vicente Ortiz Diago was his main teacher and mentor, combining his advices with masterclasses with renowned clarinetists like David Howard, Gary Grey, Michelle Zukovsky, Pascal Moragues, Harry Skoler, Santiago Pérez, among others. Vicente Ortiz Gimeno holds a degree in clarinet performance from Castellon Conservatory (Valencia, Spain) and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA).

His passion for playing clarinet, let him be involved with many chamber, orchestral and concert band projects, performing in important concert halls in Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Dominican Republic and at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. He also played as a soloist in recitals in Spain, Boston and during the Claremont Clarinet Festival (Los Angeles, CA) in 2007 and 2008. Those appearances allowed him to play and learn from great musicians such as Joshua Bell, Gauthier Capuçon, Wayne Shorter, Danilo Pérez, John Patitucci, Terri-Lyne Carrington or Gary Burton, collaborating with the Berklee Global Jazz Institute Orchestra. After several years teaching and performing in Valencia and Badajoz schools of music, he decided to move to Boston to study Film Scoring and orchestral conducting at Berklee College of Music, having been awarded a full scholarship by the Sociedad General de Autores y Editores. At this point, his symphonic and concert band music enriched enormously and his compositions were touched by the jazz and film-scoring flavor. At the same time, his music was recognized in several national and international contests in Spain and USA, wining the "Ciutat de Llíria" International Composition Award and the Millican Composition Award and the Berklee Composition Competition, among others. Vicente is the recipient of the 2013 Steve Kaplan Award by ASCAP Foundation.

He has received several commissions for concert band and his music has been selected as the mandatory pieces for the traditional concert band contests in Castellón, Valencia and Alicante, being performed as well in important concert halls such as the Berklee Performance Center, Jordan Hall (Boston, MA), Palau de la Música de Valencia or "L'Auditori" at Valencia Opera House (Valencia, Spain).

Ortiz Gimeno is a versatile musician and besides his activities as a clarinetist, composer and teacher, he is very interested in orchestral conducting, studying with Francisco Noya and George Monseur at Berklee College of Music in Boston and attending several summer courses and workshops with conductors like Enrique García Asensio or Bernardo Adam Ferrero, among others. Vicente has been the assistant conductor of the Berklee Symphony Orchestra during his time in Boston and musical director of the Berklee Society of Composers Chamber Orchestra. He conducted recording sessions at 20th Century Fox and The Bridge scoring stages in Los Angeles, as well as in WGBH in Boston.

Vicente lives in Los Angeles, working as a film composer and orchestrator. His credit list includes projects produced in the US and Europe by PBS, HBO, ESPN, Antena3 Films, WGBH, among others.
