- A few days before his second plan for a political solution was to be presented to the UN., Bernadotte was assassinated on Friday, 17 September, 1948, by members of the armed Jewish Zionist group, Lehi (commonly known as the Stern Gang or Stern Group).
- Folke Bernadotte, Greve af Wisborg, was the son of Count Carl August Bernadotte of Wisborg (formerly Prince Oscar of Sweden, Duke of Gotland), and his wife, née Ebba Henrietta Munck af Fulkila. He was the grandson of King Oscar II and the nephew of King Gustaf V of Sweden.
- During the Second World War, the count was head of the Swedish Red Cross and a leading figure in the rescue of thousands of concentration camp prisoners in Germany - transported via Denmark to Sweden until 4 May 1945.
- Married to Estelle Bernadotte (aka Estelle Romaine Manville, daughter of Board Chairman Hiram Edward Manville of Johns-Manville Corp.) from 1 December, 1928 until his death in 1948. They had four sons, two died during childhood.
- The library at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, USA is named in his honor.
