Biography

At the time of her death, in addition to son Hubert H. Humphrey III; she had a daughter, Nancy Humphrey Solomonson; two additional sons, Robert Humphrey and Douglas Humphrey; 12 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren. From her second marriage, she was also the step-mother of two adult children, and grandmother to 5 more grandchildren.

Her son, Hubert H. Humphrey III (popularly known as Skip Humphrey) was elected to the Minnesota State Senate, serving from 1973 to 1983. In 1982, he ran for, and was elected Minnesota Attorney General, serving from 1983-1999, four consecutive terms. In 1998, he ran for Minnesota Governor as the Democratic nominee, losing to the independent candidate, Jesse Ventura, who was Minnesota Governor from 1999-2003.

Her first husband, Hubert H. Humphrey had been Mayor of Minneapolis, U.S. Senator from Minnesota, Vice-President of the United States, and then U.S. Senator from Minnesota again, until his death on January 13, 1978.

After serving as interim U.S. Senator from Minnesota, she married Max Brown in 1981, becoming Muriel Buck Humphrey Brown. Prior to her return to Huron, SD to dedicate a new airport terminal in 1979, she had not seen Max Brown since her 1930 High School graduation.

The first woman to represent Minnesota in the U.S. Senate, and had been the only woman to represent Minnesota until 2007, a distinction she held until the election of Minnesota U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar.
