Pearl Mackie was born on May 29, 1987 in Brixton, London, England, UK. She is an actress and producer, known for Doctor Who (2005), The Diplomat (2023) and Horizon Line (2020). She has been married to Kam Chhokar since May 4, 2024.

She has admitted that she had no knowledge of Doctor Who (1963) as a child because it was cancelled by Peter Cregeen, the BBC's Head of Series, when she was just two years old.

She was announced as the new Doctor Who (2005) companion on 23 April 2016. In 2017, it was announced that she would also be the first openly gay companion to the Doctor (Captain Jack, played by John Barrowman, was pansexual/omnisexual).

Granddaughter of screenwriter Philip Mackie, who died 18 months before she was born.
