China National Opera House is known for Jean-Michel Jarre: Live a Pekin (2004).

The CNOH opera troupe has performed with world-famous artists including Montserrat Caballe, Jessye Norman, Renee Fleming, Angela Gheorghiu, Jo Sumi, Marcello Giordani, Salvatore Licitra, Ramon Vargas, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and Hayley Westenra.

The Central Opera House of China was established in 1952, and consists of an opera troupe, a choir, symphony orchestra, and stage art workshop.

CNOH has staged world-famous operas including La Traviata, Madama Butterfly, Eugene Onegin, Turandot, La Boheme, Rigoletto, Othello, Cavalleria Rusticana, Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Le Roi d'Yis, and Tannhauser, among others. CNOH has also presented many Chinese operas, including Liu Hulan, Song of Grassland, Ayiguli, The 100th Bride, Marco Polo, Du Shiniang, Farewell My Concubine, Countryside Girl Teacher, Love Story of Rawap, and Revolution in 1911.

The opera company has visited Finland, the former Soviet Union, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cairo, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington DC, New York, Houston, and Dallas.

In June 2001, with the Three Tenors, the opera house gave a performance at the Forbidden City as part of Beijing's bid for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.
