- He retired from the city of Memphis in 2005 after 43 years of service.
- He helped organize the 1968 strike in which 1,300 Memphis sanitation workers demanded higher wages and better working conditions after two colleagues were killed by a malfunctioning garbage truck. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. came to Memphis to support the workers. On his second visit, he was shot and killed on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel.
- He regularly spoke at events commemorating the strike, including those for the 50th anniversary of King's assassination.
