Biography

Henrik Åström

Overview

  • Born
    January 11, 1980 · Gothenburg, Sweden
  • Birth name
    Nils Henrik Åström

Mini bio

  • Åström's unique quality as a composer is his strong sense of melody, stemming from his roots in Swedish instrumental folk and popular music. His film scores are intimate, featuring original palettes of sound and instrumentation tailored to each project. He often performs and orchestrates his own music, playing piano, electric and acoustic guitars, and percussion. He has a distinct style of blending orchestra with guitars and synthesized instruments, instinctively adding elements of folk and pop music.

As a child, Åström pursued basic music and piano lessons, beginning to write original music on the piano when he was nine years old. His formal music theory and composition studies began at the Stockholm Music Conservatory at the age of 19. After completing his studies, he started his own recording studio in Stockholm, where he worked with bands, orchestras, and a wide range of soloists, choirs, and ensembles.

He has recorded and toured with various artists, including Miss Li, Titiyo, and Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols. He has also composed theater music for the First Physical Theatre Company in South Africa, Swedish choreographer Frauke, Mandarin Orange Performing Arts in New York, and Los Angeles Movement Arts.

After operating his studio in Sweden, Åström relocated to Boston to study composition at Berklee College of Music under professor Mark Rossi. Since 2011, he has been based in Los Angeles, working as a full-time film composer.

In 2014, he wrote the score for the feature film drama Child of Grace (2014), starring Ted Levine. The film aired on the Lifetime Network, and the score earned him a nomination for Best Music Score at the Orlando International Film Festival.

In 2021, he composed the original score for two seasons of the Viaplay/Discovery Channel documentary series Secrets of the Viking Stone (2020), starring Peter Stormare.

In addition to his work as a primary composer, he has contributed music for composers such as Daniel Licht on the video game Dishonored (2017), Carlos Rafael Rivera on the television series Hacks (2026), Frederik Wiedmann on the video game The Dragon Prince: Xadia (2025), and Heitor Pereira on the animated film The Angry Birds Movie (2016).

He has also produced music for commercials, including the Miss Li song "Oh Boy," which was featured in a 2010 worldwide Volvo marketing campaign.

  • Son of internationally renowned archaeologist Paul Åström.

Quotes

  • When scoring to picture I would call my process very improvisational. I like to capture the moments of exploration when I'm not thinking too much.
