Biography

Johanis Lyons-Reid is an award-winning Malaysian-Australian filmmaker from Adelaide, South Australia. He has worked as a Director, Cinematographer or Editor on narrative drama (The Last Elephant on Earth, 2021), documentaries (Black Empire, 2022, The Loop, SBS, 2019; Deadly Family Portraits, iview, 2019; Everything is Connected, iView, 2017; Speaking for Sea Country, iView, 2018) and freelance for production companies, agencies and channels including ABC, SBS, Stan, Disney+, Amazon and Vice.

As a Director Johanis wants to tell stories that examine the fault lines of Australian society, unearthing the unique and unexpected that contains universal truth. As a Cinematographer Johanis is constantly pushing his craft, with dark emotive imagery that is both breathtakingly beautiful and uncontrived. As an editor Johanis is interested in creating rhythm and breaking expectation, finding the musicality of each individual project and a language that will express the feeling of the film.
