Rex Vijayan is an Indian composer, guitarist, singer, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist from Kerala, India. He is widely known as a co-founder and guitarist of the Malayalam alternative rock band Avial, and for bringing a distinctive blend of rock, folk, fusion, electronic textures, and atmospheric scoring into Malayalam cinema.
He began his film-composing career with the score for "Bridge," Anwar Rasheed’s segment in the anthology film Kerala Cafe (2009). He later gained recognition for his work in films such as Chaappa Kurishu (2011), 22 Female Kottayam (2012), Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi (2013), Parava (2017), Mayaanadhi (2017), Sudani from Nigeria (2018), Thamaasha (2019), Valiyaperunnal (2019), and Rifle Club (2024).
Known for his experimental and emotionally textured approach to music, Vijayan’s compositions often combine guitar-driven melodies, alternative rock influences, ambient soundscapes, and regional musical sensibilities. His work on Mayaanadhi earned him major recognition, including the Filmfare Award South for Best Music Director in Malayalam.
Beyond cinema, Rex Vijayan has been an important figure in Kerala’s independent music scene through his association with Avial and his earlier work with Motherjane. His music continues to stand out for its originality, modern sound design, and ability to deepen the emotional atmosphere of the stories he scores.
