Biography

Alice Diop was born in 1979 in Aulnay-sous-Bois, Seine-Saint-Denis, France. She is a director and writer, known for Saint Omer (2022), We (2021) and La permanence (2016).

For fifteen years, I've been making films from the margins, with a political intention of filming those margins - the banlieue, people who have been silenced, because those are the people I come from. That's my territory, my history.

I was very shy, very introverted, and literature helped me build my own universe. I need to have the time to read.

I make cinema because I have certain obsessions - not to be visible, but because I need to. I'm constantly questioning this new position I'm in.
