Jimmy "James" Renald was a Canadian singer-songwriter and producer best known as the vocalist of the Montreal pop duo Sky. After leaving the group, he gained recognition as a songwriter for artists like Mandy Moore and Taylor Hicks.

Born in La Tuque, Quebec, Renald developed an early passion for music and later attended Musitechnic, a production school in Montreal. There, he met Antoine Sicotte in the early 1990s, forming a lasting friendship based on their shared love for Steely Dan, jazzy R&B, and Ice-T's metal band Body Count. The pair became roommates and briefly played in a band called Louder Than a Bomb.

In 1997, Renald and Sicotte formed Sky, channeling their talents into a pop project. Signed by EMI Music Canada, they released their debut album Piece of Paradise in 1998, which included hits like "Some Kinda Wonderful" and "Love Song," both co-written by Renald. "Love Song" reached No. 1 on the Canadian charts, and the album's success led to a U.S. release in 1999 under Arista Records with revised artwork.

Despite the band's rising popularity, Renald struggled with severe anxiety, which worsened as their fame grew. He left Sky in late 1999 and relocated to Los Angeles to focus on solo work. While Sky won Best New Group at the 2000 Juno Awards, Renald did not attend the ceremony, instead working on a solo album under the pseudonym Mackenzie, B.C., which ultimately remained unreleased.

In Los Angeles, Renald collaborated extensively with Mandy Moore, writing her song "Cry" for the A Walk to Remember soundtrack (2002) and contributing two tracks, "Slummin' in Paradise" and "Nothing That You Are," to her 2007 album Wild Hope. He also penned "The Runaround" for Taylor Hicks' 2006 self-titled album.

Renald's talents extended beyond songwriting; he composed scores for Hollywood movie trailers and commercials, including Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and Rampart. He also co-created original music for the Funny or Die spoof Field of Dreams 2: NFL Lockout, starring Taylor Lautner. Later in life, Renald explored computer graphics and Oculus Rift technology, aiming to develop innovative VR storytelling applications.

On August 11, 2018, at the age of 47, Renald took his own life in Eastman, Quebec, after going missing the day before. His lifelong struggle with anxiety was cited as a contributing factor to his tragic death.
