Benoît Sabatier

Benoît Sabatier is a French writer, director, producer, and cultural journalist. He first gained recognition as a prominent rock critic, contributing for over two decades to publications such as Technikart, Rock & Folk, Schnock, and Gonzaï, and publishing the essay Nous sommes jeunes, nous sommes fiers: an exploration of French youth and rock subcultures. Alongside his work in journalism, Sabatier expanded into filmmaking, forming a long-standing creative collaboration with writer-director Marcia Romano. Together, they wrote and directed three independent, self-produced Marseille-based films - Le Moral des Troupes (2012), Amore Synthétique (2015), and Pastis Brut (2017) - often referred to as the "Marseille Trilogy". Marked by musicality and raw energy, these films forged a radical cinematic portrait of the city, revealing a side of Marseille rarely seen on screen. In 2024, Sabatier and Romano wrote and directed Fotogenico, their first official feature film. Presented in the ACID selection at the Cannes Film Festival, the film drew strong critical acclaim, with Première highlighting its "poetic, wild energy and powerful sense of freedom", Le Quotidien praising it as "a comic and melancholic masterpiece", France Inter describing it as "ambitious and radical, absolutely unstoppable", and ultimately Les Cahiers du Cinéma calling it "a delightfully quirky comedy that makes you feel good".
