Biography

Hélène Ahrweiler was born on August 29, 1926 in Athens, Greece. She was married to Jacques Ahrweiler. She died on February 16, 2026 in Paris, France.

Specialized in Byzantine studies. She was a professor at the Sorbonne, and the first woman to become the historic French university's principal.

In 1967,she became a professor at the Sorbonne, and from 1976-81 was the principal of the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.

Studied history and archaeology before moving to Paris in 1953.
