Biography

Johannes Vogel

Biography

  • Johannes Vogel was born in Vienna and was educated as a classical percussionist at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, graduating with distinction. He began his professional career with the Vienna State Opera and Vienna Volksoper and performed with orchestras and ensembles including the Vienna Philharmonic. From 1989 to 1991, he studied conducting privately with Claudio Abbado.

Internationally active as a composer, conductor, orchestrator and music producer, Vogel has built a career spanning both the classical and film-scoring worlds. His screen-music credits include productions such as Hercules, One Piece, Inferno, The LEGO Batman Movie, Ghost in the Shell, A Monster Calls, Blackhat, Outlander, Vikings: Valhalla, The Impossible, Mama and Crimson Peak.

A major chapter of his international film career developed through his long-standing collaboration with composer Fernando Velázquez. As Music Producer and Score Producer, Vogel worked on numerous international feature films including Mama, The Impossible, Mariah Mundi, Crimson Peak, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Guernica and The Colony. On MGM/Paramount’s Hercules, starring Dwayne Johnson and directed by Brett Ratner, he additionally served as Score Composer.

Throughout his screen-music career, Vogel has worked with internationally renowned composers including Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard, Lorne Balfe, Harry Gregson-Williams, Rupert Gregson-Williams, Michael Danna, Christophe Beck, Steven Price, John Paesano, Bear McCreary and Fernando Velázquez.

As a conductor, he has worked with orchestras including the Philharmonia Orchestra London, Brussels Philharmonic, Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Budapest Symphony Orchestra, Slovak National Symphony Orchestra and Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. From 2016 to 2021, Vogel served as Principal Conductor and Artistic Director at Synchron Stage Vienna, where he conducted and artistically oversaw orchestral recordings for international film, television, advertising and video-game productions.

Alongside his international screen work, Vogel maintains a strong connection to classical music and music education. He teaches Film Music Composition and Conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz and directs the university’s Film Music Orchestra. He has also taught Conducting for Modern Filmscoring at the Hollywood Music Workshop.

His latest major project is VIENNA GAME, the international Disney+ series for which he composed the original score together with Austrian composer, violinist and violist Annamaria Kowalsky. The project brings together many of the defining strands of Vogel’s career: Vienna’s classical musical heritage, contemporary film scoring, large-scale orchestral recording and international screen production.

Moving between the concert hall, recording studio and screen, Vogel’s work reflects a career built around the connection of classical orchestral tradition with contemporary cinematic storytelling.
